United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has voiced concern about North Korea's landmine attack

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has voiced concern about North Korea's landmine attack on South Korean soldiers, according to his office Tuesday.

Ban called on the North to stop provocation and resume dialogue to ease tensions on the peninsula, it added.

Two South Korean soldiers based near the Demilitarized Zone were seriously wounded in the blasts last week. They stepped on landmines while paroling the South Korean side of the DMZ. The South's military said the North was behind the attack, while Pyongyang remains silent about the incident.

In a statement, the U.N. Spokesperson's Office quoted Ban as saying the North should "fully adhere to the obligations under the Armistice Agreement and engage in dialogue on this incident."

He stressed the need for alleviating tensions on the peninsula still technically at war after the 1950-53 conflict ended in a cease-fire.

During a May trip to his homeland, South Korea, Ban reaffirmed his willingness to do "everything possible" in his capacity to help promote peace and stability on the peninsula. (Yonhap)
