Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha called for global support for South Korea's efforts to ease regional tension through talks with North Korea in a speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, Thursday.

In a separate speech marking the "Korea PyeongChang Night" event, Kang also underscored Seoul's push to build momentum for peace and prosperity through the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Friday.

Kang's remarks during the annual forum that wrapped up its four-day run on Friday came amid concerns the Kim Jong-un regime may steal the show at the Olympics and use it as a stage for propaganda.

The foreign ministry and the PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG) co-hosted the "Korea PyeongChang Night" on the sidelines of the forum of heads of state and global business leaders.

"Minister Kang explained the government's efforts to lessen tension on the Korean Peninsula and build peace through the recent inter-Korean talks over North Korea's participation in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics," the ministry said.

"In her keynote address, the minister expressed hope that as the Seoul 1988 Summer Olympics served as an opportunity to overcome the Cold War between East and West and promote unity, the PyeongChang Winter Olympics will provide the momentum for peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula, in Northeast Asia and around the world by becoming the driving force behind the resumption of inter-Korean talks and North Korea's participation in the Olympics."

In his congratulatory address, WEF Executive Director Olivier Schwab said he expects South Korea to successfully hold the Olympics by connecting the spirit of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the spirit of the Games.

Over 300 high-level officials and entrepreneurs joined "Korea PyeongChang Night," at which South Korea outlined its final preparations for the Olympics.

Kang joined the forum from Wednesday to Friday.

Kang said in an interview with Reuters on Wednesday that Seoul had prepared "all contingency scenarios" against Pyongyang's possible military provocations around the Olympics.

"We go into these discussions with a clear understanding of what might be possible," Kang said. "Another provocation is always a possibility. So we approach these talks with all contingency scenarios in mind and are prepared to deal with whatever might happen, but overall it's a good thing."

Kang said Seoul will "need to make the best of" the Olympics, adding "this is an opportunity for engagement and a peaceful engagement."

The Kim regime has been running campaigns to promote inter-Korean cooperation recently.

It also set a new anniversary date to mark the formation of its military and is expected to hold a massive military parade on Feb. 8, a day before the Olympics opening ceremony.
